Five Points formed in 1857 where the streets of Merrill’s First Addition met Trenton’s older, angled street plan. The railroad later pulled the city’s business district toward the five-way intersection.

Built as railroad and highway travel reshaped Trenton, the Plaza Hotel opened in May 1930 after local investors and construction crews carried the project through the opening months of the Great Depression.

Trenton developed around 80 acres James S. Lomax offered for the Grundy County seat in 1841. The courthouse block that followed has held county government and the work of successive generations ever since.

Built by WPA labor from locally quarried stone, the livestock pavilion at Eastside Park gave Grundy County’s Farm Revue and returning horse show a permanent home in 1939.

North Central Missouri College opened in 1925 in borrowed rooms on the third floor of Trenton High School. Its survival and growth depended on generations of local people who kept higher education close to home.

Jewett Norris spent roughly 35 years making a living in Grundy County. After moving away, he returned what he believed the county had given him by funding a public library and its endowment.
